penniless, broke. The word is a shorten-ing of the rhyming slang 'boracic lint': skint. A genuine example of London working-class argot, this term was adopted into raffish speech in general from the early 1970s. (Boracic is an older name for boric acid used as a weak antiseptic impregnating band-ages, etc.)
